3rd Magazine contents analysis

for this contents of kerrang we can see that the colour scheme is much like the front covers where it has white, black and yellow, but this time there is little red and the background colours are now white and not black, its like the white and black have been swapped.  the masthead is at the top but more to the right and has a black background on top of te white background, and a yellow font, this makes it stand out to let the reader know they are on the contents page.  underneath this is the issue and the date so that the reader knows which issue for what week they have before they read on not knowing.  there are about 9 cover lines accompanied by a photograph in this page with one bigger than the others which is the main photograph, and this is because this would be the main article of the magazine.  each of the cover lines are given their page numbers so that the reader will be able to know and  flick to the correct page, and the font for the page numbers is in yellow with a black background which fits in with the masthead of the page and makes the page layout have the same theme throughout the whole page.  on the right hand side of the page there are more cover lines with a title saying 'this week' to let the reader know what is going on in the week, this has a similar font to the masthead but the colours have been swapped so there is a yellow background and black text.  underneath this there are seperate titles separating the cover lines of the magazine e.g 'News', 'Features' and 'Swag' and so every reader that wants to look at a particular section of the magazine can go to the category of the contents and then are able to see wich page each article is on to do with that category.  these category headings are in the same colurs as te masthead of the page so we know that they are like little 'mastheads' and helps the reader understand that what is under them is what they are about.  under each of these category headings are the cover lines which are in a black font along with their page numbers and these can be easily read over the white background.  at the bottom right of the page there is an advertisement for a subscription to the magazine and because we read from right to left this wil be the last thing the reader sees and so they will think about it more and maybe want to subscribe.

3rd Magazine cover analysis

for this magazine cover of 'Kerrang' the colour scheme used is yellow, white, black and red which is good as they are simple colours which can easily be seen on top of each other and together.  the black colour is mainly used in the background and there is very little text or cover lines using black on top of the black background.  the masthead is at the top of the page and is in a white font which is good as it can be seen easily over the black background and underneath this is the main photgraph of the cover where there are artists in a line behind one another and the man in the centre of them has his head in front of the masthead which makes it sem as if he is jumping out at you, he also has red hair which goes with the red colours used on the cover.  printed on top of his photo is a big '2010' in red and this is in the middle of the page and is very eye catching to the reader and lets them know that this magazine has 'the ultimate reveiw' of 2010.  underneath this there are cover lines of different artists names to let you know what else you can read about in the magazine and these are in both red and wite fonts to easily separate the names as well as being separated with a little star.  underneath this at the bottom of the page there are three photos with a heading of 'photos of the year, poster special' and this is giving the reader a brief preview of a few of the photos of the year and if it is an artist they like they might be intrigued to see what tbe other photos are.  there are also more cover lines at the very bottom of the page of more artists you can read about in the magazine but these might not have as much of a larger section to the magaine than the others as they have been out at the bottom of the pae in a smaller font to make them only seem present and not really impotant as the others.  to the right side of the page there is a plug stating '20 best albums of the year revealed' which has been made to look important with a red background and white font and stands out amongst its surroundings on the cover, and so is eye catching.  there is around the middle of the page, little white snow flakes, which have been used to fit inn with the christmas theme and makes the magazine look a little festive but asnt gone off of the idea of music at all which is good as it has been able to include this.  the barcode is placed at the bottom right hand side where it is usually placed.

2nd Magazine contents analysis

for the contents page of the issue of  the VIBE magazine cover above, we can see that there is a slightly different colour theme than the front cover where the black and white still remains but in the contents the white has been changed to a very light grey colour.  this is done because of the colour of Ciara's top in the photo.  the photo used is Ciara lying down on the floor sticking her legs into the air and has bent them to form a 'V' shape, for VIBE which can be seen by some people but most male readers might not notice this as they would be looking elsewhere, and this brings in a higher amount of magazine buyers as they can just look at the pictures aswell as read about the music.  the masthead used for the contents page has a white font and has been split up into three segment which makes it more eye catching to see what the page is about and takes up quite a bit of space as it is wuite large, its font is the same as the fonts used on the front cover of the magazine and so it shows it is linked to it and does not change its look, so there isnt loads of differnt fonts which might annoy the reader.  on the right third of the page under the contents masthead there is brief of some of the pages in the magazine and a black font has been used for this and they have been sorted into categories, like the NME magazine, with features and fashion, and then cover lines underneath the category names with a brief description of what is to come, and these all have a black font and so are easy to read with the light background behind them.

2nd Magazine cover analysis

for this magazine cover of Vibe the colour scheme is a red, white and black which is good because it is simple colours and makes it look good and also it is easy to see the photo and other coverlines.  the masthead it placed at the top with cover lines above it and it is a black colour which fades off into a white towards the bottom, this allows it to flow into the background ot the magazine and so it fits in with it.  the main photo of thw cover is of Ciara squatting and she is half naked.  the photo has been placed in front of the masthead so that we can see her face and to emphasise her expression.  some of the cover lines have been placed above the masthead so that when we read the masthead which catches our attention when we look at the magazine, we will the  look at the cover lines which will give us a taste of what is in the magazine.  'Ciara' has been put on the left side third of the page in a large red font to stand out and also the use of red is very effective as it is the colour of passion and so having this with the half naked photo of Ciara is very appealing to a male reader.  there is a pun above the name saying 'stand up' which is a name of one of one of her songs and as she is aquatting down it could show that she is about to 'stand up', and it is telling the reader to 'stand up'.  on the right third of the page there are cover lines listed down the whole page, and they are alternated with black and red colouring, so that it fits in with the colour theme and also it shows which artists names and articles are separate to the others so that it is easier for the reader to understand.

1st Magazine contents analysis

for the contents of the NME magazine you can see that the masthead is the same as it is on the front cover, and is also in a similar place as the front cover, the top left, but it has been move slightly to the right to make room for a list.  the masthead has been put with a text of a different font which reads 'this week' to show what will be on this page and that it is for the week the magazine has been released, and there is a date underneath this to show which week it is for. the masthead has also been given a black background so that it catches the attention of the reader easily so that they know what page they are on.  there is a list going all the way down the left side of the page and this the 'band index' and it lists all of the bands that are in the magazine and what pages they are on so you can easily find a specific band you want to read about.  the colours used are red, white and black which is the usual colours that NME magazine uses and this makes it easy to read and understand and it always makes it look good.  there are 2 main photos placed next to each other in the centre of the page and this shows it is the main article of the magazine as it has the most space given of the contents, also it has a larger headline for it, they are also given a large paragraph of text underneath telling you about what it is.  underneath this at the bottom of the page is a reasonably large advert offering you a subscription to the magazine with the price and a website where you can go to to subscribe, this has been made out large so that it cathes the attention of the reader.  on the right hand side they have the rest of what the magazine includes with seperate cover lines stating what they are about e.g. News, Reviews, Features etc and then underneath each of these is the names of the articles and what page they are on.  next to a few of these is a small arrow pointing at them reading 'on the cover' which tells you that these are the articles that were on the front cover of the magazine.  at the bottom right of the page there is a large red arrow telling you that on a certain page is an important article which readers will want to read about to find out things they might want to know and this is eye catching as it has used a bright red colour for the readers interest.

1st Magazine cover analysis

i have chosen to look at this cover of NME magazine as it is different to its usual layout.  the colours used are plain black and white with a little bit of red  in there which could symbolize death as it is the 30th anniversary of John Lennons death.  as he is from the 1960's the use of the black and white image shows that he is from an older generation and wanting to show you him in his prime by having one of his younger photos on the front cover.  they have also used a grey colour for the masthead of the magazine which is usually red and this fits in with the black and white photo to make it seem older than what it actually is.  the three phrases underneath his name on the cover in red writing state clearly what is inside the magazine about him in which his genius is all of his music and life, his demons are all of his bad times and possibly enemies and obviously his final hours are his last few days and how he died.  there are also a range of other articles inside as it states on the front the names of other artists and 'NME awards voting opening' and this is located towards the bottom right and so this boots its exclusivity as it is not all just about John Lennon. at the top of the page it says 'the day music dies' which makes John Lennon out to have been a musical legend, which he was, by saying that his death was the day music died and obviously he was one of the greatest artists alive, also his name along with the masthead dominates the whole page and lets you know what the main attraction of the magazine is.  i think that they have chosen a picture of him with a cigarette in his hand because in the days he was in music alot of people were doing drugs and smoking and so it maybe shows that he could have been a drug user and obviously that he smoked.  the barcode is at the bottom right hand side which, as well as the bottom left hand side, is the usual place to put the barcode.
