For the title of the magazine i looked at many different other music magazines for inspiration of the masthead such as Vibe and Rolling stone and i noticed that they have the masthead going across the whole of the top and not just in the corner of the page like Q magazine and so i wanted to intrpret this into my own title, by having a simple font and also having it stretch across the whole page. this is when i came up with the name 'Elements' which is releated to hip-hop and so i felt this was perfect for my magazine and i then applid this to my front cover where i had it stretch across the whole page but i left the 'E' larger than the rest so that it pops out to the audience and gets them to notice the magazine.
For the graphology/page layout of the front cover i used similar ways of laying it out to how Vibe magazine does it where i have the photo of my artist covering a large chunk of the page and being centered in the page and ten surrounding him on the left and right going all of the way down the page i have cover lines and some quotes relating to certain artists which are there as cover line. i then have the masthead in a siilar place, stretched out across the top of the page to make everything fit in with it and also another aspect which is similar to Vibe is that i have the artists name from the front cover have its own specific font which stands out amongst the rest to show who it is about.
For the page laout of the contents page i had actually used similar ways to Kerrang's contents pages where they have boxed images of the main articles with the main artist being in the largest box and so i interpreted this into my own style where i had used the box idea and then had the artists coveringparts of the box to make it look like they were popping out at the audience and i felt this gave the page good style. i then used similar ways to most other music magazines of the other non-main articles being listed into categoreis e.g 'features' or 'reviews' because i felt this would allow the audience to find what they were looking for much easier than aving to flick through to find it. i then had a band index which other magazines also use, and had this as a list on the left of the page and te page numbers next to it, and made it fit in well with the rest of the page. i then used my own idea of having a microphone coming down the whole of the right hand side of the page, and placed it next to the categories of cover lines and i used it to give style and creativity as no other magazines had done this before that i know of and also it reinforced the genre of the magazine as well.
For the page layout of the double page spread i had taken the idea of having the photo covering the whole page, from a Vibe magazines double page spread, and then aplied this to my own where i had a brick wall with the main artist on the left page covering the whole page. i then had the article in two columns on the right page as most music magazines dot this so i kept in with the trend and didnt want to alter it. i had the name of the artist in the same style as the front cover and this was placed in the top centre of the pages as if it were graffiti on the brick wall, and under this towards the right, above the article was the heading of what the article was about. between the picture of the artist and the article itself i placed a large quote of what the artist had said in the article to let the audience have a little preview of what was to come and cose this quote to atttract them to want to find out more about this artist and what was to come.
For the costumes, props, iconography used to reflect genre for my front cover, as i have chosen my genre to be Hip-Hop i have had my artist on the front cover wear clothing that is worn by many British hip-hop artits today including a graphic T-shirt and then a black jacket covering this, also i have given him a flat peak cap and he is wearing this in a specific way to show style, also the way he is holding his jacket open shows that he is revealing his T-shirt to te audience and is expressing himself as a hip-hop artist.
For my contents page i have again had the photo of the artist from the front cover in a peak cap but this time he is holding it in a pose to show style, he is also wearing the same T-shirt which i think shows continuity from the front cover, but he is also now wearing a grey hoody which again is something worn by Hip-hop artists and so reflects the genre of Hip-Hop, my other artists, again one is wearing a T-shirt and hoody, clothes worn by Hip-Hop artists but still looking different to my main artist so there is similarities but not obvious ones, and my third artist is wearing a polo shirt wit the buttons done up the top which is an idea i got from Professor Green who is also a Hip-Hop artist and so i applied it to my artist to show similarity in music and genre.
For my double page spread i have my artist in the same clothing as he was in on the contents page and this is because as this is the article shown on the contents page, the clothes he was in there gives the audience a taste of the article and having him in the same clothes for the articles page,i think is good for continuity, however this time we are shown part of his legs and can see he is wearing dark colourd baggy jeans which is something again worn by Hip-Hop artists and again reflects on the genre of Hip-Hop.
For the camerawork and framing of image for my front cover, i have used a mid shot of the artist from waist to top of head with him looking directly at the camera and this allows the audience to see him from the perspective of being a direct person looking straight at you and has nothing to hide, this is also emphasised by the fact he has his holding his jacket open as if he is revealing himself to the audience.
For my contents page i have again used mid shots, for all three artists but this time i have cut it so all we can see is their chests and above and for the main artist this might make the audience want to see more, and so read on, it also allows for the artists to fit well in their boxes and having this amount of their bodies on the page i think was a good amount as the head and chest is really all we need to see to get a good view of what the artists look like.
For my double page spread i have used a more zoomed out kind of panning/mid shot as i have got the artist in there from a reasonable distance, aswell as having the brick wall taking up te rest of the shot. i have this time included part of the artists legs and tis kind of lets us see more about him and having it more further out allow us to see more of his surroundings like the brick wall he is standing infront of.
For the font and style of the front cover i have 3 main fonts used where i have the masthead as one font, whic is big and bold to attract attention as well as being simple to read, i have the cover lines of the page in another font but in two alternate colours to separate them from one another allowing them to be close together, also i have used a slighlty different font which is more eye catching and towards the top of the page for style for another cover line. i have then used a completely different font for the name of the artist to show that this is about him and that the person next to this name is this person and i feel this worked well as it shows style and creativity.
For my contents page i have used only 1 font across the whole of the page, however i have given different affects to the fonts at different parts of the page so that they do not look the same, and i felt this worked well, for the title i have used a big bold, yellow colour of the font and this is eye catching and shows it is the contents page, i have used te same style for the headings of 'This week' which shows the categories of articles underneath it, and the band index. i have then used different effects on the page numbers of the articles and band index to separate them slightly and give the page better style and creativity.
For my double page spread i have used the same font as the front cover for my artists name to show continutity from the two pages, i have then used a different font for my headng which is bold and stands out, making it easy to read. i have used an italic font for my quote on the page to give the page a bit more style, i have then used an easy to read small print font for my article to make it fit in the two columns and have put it in a black font, and a red fonr for when the artist is speaking.
For the genre and how the magazine cover suggests it, i have not used any props to suggest the genre of Hip-Hop, however i have used the clothing of the artist with the T-shirt, jacket and hat which are things worn quite a bit by some Hip-Hop artists as i found this out in my research and planning. i have also used the masthead to suggest Hip-Hop as it is 'Elements' which refers to the 9 element od Hip-Hop and so this is mainly what reveals the genre to an audience. i have also used certain words in my cover lines to suggest that it is Hip-Hop by using such words as 'Rap' and also 'Hip-Hop' a couple of times which makes the genre seem kind of obvious.
For my contents page the things that suggest the Hip-Hop genre are, the clothing of all three artists e.g the cap, hoddies and shirts, also another things that suggests the genre is te microphone i have coming down the side of the page, and this represents a microphone waiting to be picked up, as if each artist were about to tell something in their articles when its their turn to, this i feel gives good style and creativity.
For my double page spread the things i have used to suggest the genre are again the clothing of the artist, the tshirt, hody, and cap, aswell as the jeans this time. also another thing is the brick wall the artist is standing infront of as this shows a kind of rough/backstreet theme suggesting that the Hip-Hop music he does is possibly rough or dirty.
My artist on the front cover is represented from his facial expression as a serious person as he has a serious face, which shows that he is committed to what he does and the fact he is holding is jacket open to represent he is revealing himself shows that he is letting the audience know that he could be revealing things about himself in is article to come and is trying to make himself be heard.
For my contents page the second artist is represented as being 'Badass' as he has his fingers sticking up towards the camera, and also has his hood up which shows he doesnt care what anyone has to say and that he is cool from the way he acts and raps. my third artist is represented as a more relaxed and having him looking out into the distance the way he is shows he is ready for anyting and is ready for a challenge.
For my double page spread the artist has is hand u to the camera and is looking down at the floor as if he doesnt want to be disturbed and so this represents independence as he is giving his music as his own and in his own style. another thing about how he is represented in tis photo is that as he is by a brick wall and is in this pose it shows that he likes to do his music jus about anywhere indoors or outdoors and practise all of the time.
For the colour scheme of my front cover i have kept to a 3 colour scheme where i have black and white which are strong together and then a contrasting colour of yellow which i felt appealed to both female and male audiences as it does have a little feminisity to it although it does balance out masculinity from the black colour and so i felt these 3 colours would go well together.
For my contents page i have used te same colour scheme as the front cover where i have the two black and white colours and then the yellow to contrast and again this gives the page style and also appeals to bothe male and female.
For my double page spread i have again used the same colour scheme as the front cover and the contents page, by having the two main black and white colours with the contrasting yellow to give style, however in the article i have used a red colour for when the artist is speaking to show a bit more style and also to allow the audience to see clearer when the artist is talking and this fits in well with the rest of the page as it is a colour which goes well with the other three without standing out too much.
